Saturn is often referred to as “The Lord of Karma” or “The Great Malefic” and even “The Task Master,” all of which can provoke feelings of pessimism and negativity. Rarely are Saturn’s countless hidden gifts emphasized upon first contemplating this great planet’s Astrological significations.
It is is the planet that represents structure, social-political systems and authority, as well as the awareness of time and karma. He is the harbinger of the blatant recognition that our long-standing way of life may no longer be serving us. With Saturn’s ingress into Aquarius, we will each find ourselves investing energy to restructure the area of our lives reflected by the zodiacal sign of Aquarius.
Comfortable in the sign of Aquarius — both the planet and sign essentially represent similar ideals and goals. As you read through the below examples of Saturn’s influence through Aquarius, think about how both — the balanced and / imbalanced expressions — may relate to you personally:
- The hard-cold reality of the here and now; facing what needs to be done and taking action (or) / defiance, denial, and lack of action
- Unexpected surprising events and insights that are meant to inform and inspire / feeling overwhelmed, fragmented, and unable to integrate — trauma and post traumatic stress (PTS)
- Studying and acknowledging our past so we can make wise decisions that evolve us into a better future / ignorance (don’t know what we don’t know) — refusing or unable to learn from our history
- Futuristic innovation that leads to revitalization / maintaining the status quo at our own peril
- Responsibility and right action; justice and equality for all / recklessness and self-serving interest; intolerance and division
- Methodical and virtuous diligence that seeks to uplift / ill-informed impulsive action that creates mayhem and confusion
- Moral and ethical use of intelligence / seeking to manipulate knowledge (what’s the truth!?!) for self-seeking goals and power
- Leadership that strives to elevate and unite the whole / guiding with extremist ideals that weaken and alienate
- Receiving rewards equivalent to our effort, and so forth
These Saturn in Aquarius themes speak to our current times. It may all sound like Saturnian drudgery, but when we focus and commit to the positive qualities mentioned, the rewards can be astounding. Individually, an arduous Saturn period can be analogous to the development of the “diamond soul,” which was so aptly referred to in ancient Buddhist teachings and is the result of a life lived authentically and honorably!
Within the United States, Saturn’s movement into Aquarius (Dec. 17, 2020) coincided with social-political unrest, discontent, and polarization. Our spiritual teachers remind us that the ancient Yin-Yang symbol or hermetic axiom “as above, so below” are to help guide us on our evolutionary path — to remain alert to any polarity that pulls us out of balance. With the intent of returning to balance as quickly as possible. We are asked to remember that everything happening outside of us is but a reflection of that which resides within — both individually and collectively. How often are we consciously walking in balance, peace, and love?
During this Saturn in Aquarius period, we will find that our personal and collective ideals can unexpectedly change and evolve. Many of our external transformations will manifest through reform or scandals in our governing systems. We can expect the general populace to hold our leaders accountable for corrupt and intolerable behaviors of negligence, irresponsibility, sheer recklessness, and the like, as Saturn demands that each of us take responsibility and demonstrate integrity.
Also important, is that both Saturn and Jupiter move into the air sign of Aquarius within days of one another conjoining at 0° Aquarius on December 21, 2020 — the Winter Solstice — marking what is being referred to as the 2020 “Christmas Star” and/or “A New Aira.”1 This spectacular planetary duo may also be emphasizing the actual dawning of the “Age of Aquarius.” The implications of this “New Aira” aspect have many significations, the least of which is a brand new 20-, 200-, and 800-year planetary cycle. Of which all point to new societal movements and changes.
A powerful planetary combination, these potent new cycles are emphasizing new beginnings in areas of life as mentioned in the above bulleted Saturnian themes, while simultaneously galvanizing these themes due to Jupiter’s expansive influence. Jupiter in Aquarius increases the individual and collective quests for social justice and law reform; futuristic revelations and inventions — including beneficial environmental constructs; interplanetary discoveries; freedom and liberation from oppression; transformed systems of knowledge and/or accessible education for all through web-based platforms; radical new communal living arrangements.
On a more personal level you will feel inspired to expand your understanding of governance, develop your vocational skills, and possibly seek a new career path. Responsible actions and hard work will be rewarded. Make the most of this period by setting your sights on a path with intentional and attainable goals. This is especially true for Aquarians because Saturn will transit directly over your Sun. If you are between the ages of 28–30 or 56–59 you are experiencing or about to experience your Saturn Return, a major maturation and turning point in your life.
Mindful awareness is required at the onset of a significant Saturn transit and we are encouraged to use integrity in all our dealings throughout its duration. The Saturnian journey often leads us into solemn periods of reflection where we may find ourselves feeling dejected or disillusioned. We may also feel thwarted in our efforts to move into the future we desire because Saturn rejects any attempt that is not in alignment with our highest purpose. Thus, we may also find relationships ending or being reorganized. Although we may experience resistance to such events, it behooves us to remember that Saturn is always acting in our best interest and only those people and things that are no longer beneficial to our lives will be eliminated. For this reason, Saturn can simultaneously promote new career heights, responsibilities, and leadership recognition. If we consciously embrace Saturn’s wise teachings we can emerge with unexpected treasures and celebrate a more dynamic and productive life.
Saturnian transits and aspects bring us to a crossroads and provide opportunities to hasten our evolution. They usher in a profound time period, which if embraced, can ultimately bring great wisdom and a deeper meaning of life. Awareness of self, including maturation, humility, and freedom— by releasing that which no longer serves you—are also characteristic of Saturn’s influence.

What exactly is a Full “Crow” Moon, you might be wondering? The Native Peoples gave it this name to denote the last Full Moon prior to the Spring Equinox (March 20), as the cawing of the crows alerted them to the end of winter. Interestingly, in many cultures still today, the crow is associated with omens, protection, birth, magic, secretiveness, and sacrifice — all of which are symbolic of crow’s deep black color. Believed to be a messenger between realms, crows have great importance in Vedic Astrology.
This Full “Crow” Moon occurs in the sign of Virgo — purification and integration of body, mind, and spirit. Virgo is also a Earth sign, signifying a special affinity for all things related to our planet. She’s often depicted holding a staff of wheat, emphasizing the sacredness of Earth’s bounty. The word Virgo is Latin for virgin, which means “whole and pure within oneself.” Therefore, whenever Virgo is highlighted, an increased motivation for improvement and refinement will occur.
Full Moons occur when the Moon moves into an opposition to and reflects the light of the Sun — in this case, Pisces. The second New Moon of 2021 is falling in the liberating sign of Aquarius making a total of six planets in the sign of the Water Bearer — wow — that’s a lot of Aquarian energy! Interestingly, this lunation is also the cause of the 2021 Chinese New Year celebration — the Year of the Ox. Known for diligence and dependability, Ox’s have a strong and determined nature. They are often stubborn and politically minded.
Chinese New Year and the Ox aside, Aquarius is the celestial sign that bestows the universal cosmic waters onto humankind and our planet. Although Aquarius is an air sign, it is known as The Water Bearer and this connection through the healing element of water symbolizes an ability for the celestial guardian to spread cosmic gifts of giving and restoring life to humanity.
As you may remember, the New Moon, is a time for renewed hope, rebirth of creativity, and a time to begin new projects. It is the best time of the month to assert positive affirmations, chants, and visualizations. It is an optimal time for hope and support for those seeking freedom. It grants courage, fortitude, and strength on our quest for liberation: spiritual, emotional, or mental.
Aquarius is the zodiac sign associated with revolutionary change. It seeks to restructure any outdated constructs in an effort to create a more just world for all. Aquarius dreams of a world where all people and sentient beings are honored and treated with respect for their unique contributions to the whole. The planet Saturn begins its journey through your Astrological horoscope at the moment of your birth. Its complete cycle through the zodiac and the 12 houses of your Astrological chart takes roughly 29 years. The Saturn Return occurs when Saturn passes through the sign it was in at the time of your birth and will be in effect for approximately two-and-a-half years. You will likely experience the Saturn Return at least twice in your life, typically around age 28–30 and again at 58–60. If you were born during 1992–95 or 1962–64 you were born with Saturn in Aquarius and are currently experiencing your first or second Saturn Return.
When Saturn returns to its natal position in your chart you will undergo one of the most intense maturation periods of your life. In general, Saturn Returns are precursors to strong and sometimes painful yearnings for change. During this period you will be divinely guided to relinquish anything in your life that does not support your future life goals and purpose. You may find yourself feeling compelled to prioritize your objectives and activities so you can make the best use of your abilities for the next 29.5 years.

The Birthing of a New Cycle

The impending rendezvous between the two game-changing planets, Saturn and Pluto, has intensified over the past two years. It’s important to note that the last time Saturn met up with Pluto in the sign of Capricorn was over 500 years ago. During that crucial period, humanity underwent great change. There was religious upheaval, groundbreaking scientific findings, and the discovery of new astronomical bodies. As we embark on the current Saturn–Pluto cycle, we are witnessing the birthing of a new era of evolution on our planet, during which, humanity stands at the precipice of catastrophic global challenges. Are we ready? Many life-changing and life-saving discoveries are occurring daily — will they be enough?
The planet Saturn represents structure in all its forms, particularly in relationship to social political and religious establishments. When Saturn is operating from a state of balance, we govern from a fair, responsible, and ethical place. We are accountable for our actions and seek to learn from our past. We recognize that all of Earth’s life forms are intricately connected and that one cannot thrive without the other. We maintain a dignified respect and reverence for differences and seek to build supportive structures and alliances, which are open to periodic change when it’s necessary for the growth, welfare, and evolution of all.
When Saturn is out-of-balance it becomes controlling. Control is essentially based on intense fear (a Saturn word!) of losing control. If this occurs, life and societies can become stagnated and crystallized. Those who govern will seek to control, usurping life from others so they can remain in power. They don’t take responsibility for their actions and prey on others’ weaknesses.
Saturn is associated with restructuring that which no longer serves the greater whole. This need will occur in our personal as well as our collective lives. If an area of our life, has outgrown its purpose and is no longer fulfilling our higher wellbeing, it is time to embrace change so something better can replace it. Letting go and accepting change is applicable not only to our personal lives, but also the social-political spheres.
Pluto is the planet that is associated with power and transformation. When we feel disempowered, the process of becoming empowered is amazingly transformative, for us personally, as well as others. When Pluto acts from a place of balance it can transmute energy into something that supports strength and holistic wellbeing. Therefore, Pluto can be likened to the practice of shamanism: The ability to transverse the underworld and face the demons and shadows wreaking havoc, so we can bring harmony to the dark-and-light aspects of our inner-and-outer worlds. When Pluto is involved, it’s imperative that we face our innermost demons so we can transform. Otherwise, and often without our cooperation, a cataclysmic episode may occur in order to bring about any intended and necessary change.
With Saturn’s approaching conjunction to Pluto, we are realizing what needs to change in our personal lives and even in governments, both at home and abroad. Despite an unknown future, we are being called to act responsibly and to commit to personal empowerment and transformation — to remain hopeful instead of fearful.

The Winter Solstice initiated what is proving to be a powerful Astrological end to this decade and the Christmas Solar Eclipse is ushering in a much-anticipated and potent New Year. What’s interesting about these two Astrological events is that they are both occurring in the sign of Capricorn. Several themes are at play here: indicating the need to let go, tear down, restructure, and rebuild; and facing your fears, taking responsibility, and embracing your true authenticity.
Under this Eclipse you’ll want to be cognizant of family, work, or other security and responsibility dynamics. Evaluate if you are in right relationship with yourself and others. You may feel the powerful buildup of paradoxical energies — similar to a volcano — that can allow you to release your emotional and financial insecurities, while simultaneously motivating you to root out self-defeating anxieties and irrational fears. In short, this Christmas Day Eclipse is asking each of us to search deeply and awaken to our personal and collective paradigm shifts.
Powerful psychic energies give birth to new information as the light of the luminaries darken during an Eclipse. Once an Eclipse is complete, you are presented with an opportunity for rebirth. An Eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are in alignment with the nodal axis of the Moon. The nodal axis points define your own personal destiny. With this New Moon Solar Eclipse occurring in the sign of Capricorn, you are each being called to use the gifts of your destiny with integrity and wisdom.
The Sun symbolizes creativity, strength and outward expression. It is the energy that gives you the confidence to plan for your future. During a Solar Eclipse, you can find yourself searching for your inner light among the shadows and darkness created by the mind and ego.
